The Alumni Association of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has hailed the nomination of the institution’s immediate past Vice Chancellor, Abayomi Fasina, a professor of Soil Science, as a non-career ambassador by President Bola Tinubu.

In accordance with Section 121(2), (3) and (4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), Mr Tinubu forwarded Mr Fasina’s nomination as a non-career ambassador/high commissioner-designate to the Senate for confirmation.

The request was contained in a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during Wednesday’s plenary.

In a statement, the President of the Alumni Association, Taye Ojo, described the nomination as a well-deserved recognition of Mr Fasina’s leadership, academic accomplishments and contributions to national development.

According to Mr Ojo, the nomination is a source of pride to the university community and the wider academic sector, reflecting the former vice-chancellor’s record of public service and commitment to institutional development.

Recognition of leadership

The alumni association said Mr Fasina’s tenure was marked by significant infrastructural expansion, institutional reforms and academic growth, earning him widespread recognition within the university community.

Widely referred to by members of the institution as the “architect of the new FUOYE,” the association said his administration spearheaded several landmark projects, including the Blue Roof Project, which it described as a major contributor to the university’s transformation and rising profile.

From FUOYE to the global stage, Professor Fasina has continued to distinguish himself through exemplary leadership, commitment to excellence, and service to humanity. His nomination reflects the confidence reposed in his capacity to represent Nigeria with distinction, the statement said.

Call to service

The association expressed confidence that Mr Fasina would bring the same integrity, dedication and professionalism that characterised his academic and administrative career to his diplomatic assignment.

It added that the nomination should inspire students, alumni and young professionals by demonstrating that dedication, competence and selfless service remain pathways to national recognition.
