Chelsea goalkeeper Martínez hospitalised after collision with Everton defender

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital for precautionary tests after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during their Premier League match on Saturday.

According to the Associated Press, Martinez came off his line to meet a cross into the penalty area and collided with Branthwaite during the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool.

Medical staff from both teams attended to the players.

Branthwaite continued after undergoing a concussion test, while Martinez received about 10 minutes of treatment before being carried off on a stretcher.

The Associated Press, citing broadcaster TNT Sports, reported that the Chelsea goalkeeper was being taken to hospital.

Martinez was replaced by Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso gave an update on the goalkeeper’s condition in an interview with TNT Sports after the match, as reported by The Guardian.

“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious … right now he is at the hospital doing precautionary tests … so let’s see … but this is what I know so far,” Alonso said.

The incident prompted boos from some Everton supporters as Martinez was carried off, according to The Guardian’s live coverage of the match.

Chelsea won the match 2-0, with Pedro Neto scoring in the 46th and 90th minutes.

The result moved Chelsea above Everton in the Premier League table at the time of the match report.
